INTERVIEW–STORY OF THE YEAR

How did you become interested in playing music and when did you decide to make music your career?
JOSH WILLS: It was sophomore year of high school, and uh, at first it was just like something to do with my friends and hang out, you know, something to do. As I got older and graduated I went to college like six different times and I decided I dont want to go to school, I dont want to have a desk job, so this is what I’m going to do.
Later this month your first album on Epitaph, The Black Swan, will be released. How would you describe the music from this album?
PHIL SNEED: Um, honestly its a good mixture of both of our first record and second record. Were a lot more mature, we’ve got a lot more passion in it. not that we didnt have passion before, but it’s kind of taken on a new form and a lot of crap has happened over the past six years and a lot has changed in the music business and whatnot, but we kind of took a turn lyrically and touched on different subjects within music.

What is the most difficult thing about juggling your personal life/lives and music life/lives?
PHIL SNEED: Just like the elevator business, it has its ups and its downs. On one end, it’s the best thing on earth traveling the world and doing what you love, and at the same time you’re away from your loved ones and home so that’s difficult. But it’s well worth it, we’ve got the best job in the world, we are doing what we love!
What do you do to try to stay healthy while on tour?
PHIL SNEED: It’s difficult because there’s fast food everywhere and there’s not healthy food everywhere. Our particular band works out a little bit on stage, it’s kind of physical. So, we’re getting good cardio, but you do what you can.
JOSH WILLS: You don’t drink eight glasses of water a day.
PHIL SNEED: Yeah, that’s a myth. Did you hear that?
JOSH WILLS: They found out the whole eight glasses of water a day is not needed.
PHIL SNEED: That’s crazy, but it’s still a good idea.
What are you most excited about being a part of Warped Tour [again] this summer and why?
JOSH WILLS: Being on it!

Are any of your friends on it?

JOSH WILLS: Yeah, Anberlin, Every Time I Die…
PHIL SNEED: I don’t know, probably like sixty-percent of the lineup we’ve toured with or know in some way. We’re the veterans now, so there’s not a tour that goes by where we don’t know somebody.
JOSH WILLS: We’re the old kids on Warped Tour now.
PHIL SNEED: Yeah, we’re Rancid now. We have a half hour set every day and get to hang out with friends.

If you had the opportunity to tour with any three bands, who would be on the bill?
PHIL SNEED: The Police, Garth Brooks, and Silverchair
What is one non-music related goal you hope to accomplish within the next year?

JOSH WILLS: You know, I want to try to be nicer to Adam this year.
